A Revelation About Jesus Walking On The Sea

When I read Matthew 14:22-31, a few days ago, the Holy Spirit gave me some fresh revelations about this verse and I want to share it with you. As we all know, Matthew 14:22-31 is about Jesus walking on the sea. The Holy Spirit also reminded me about Psalm 24:2 which says that the Lord founded the world upon and seas and established upon the waters.

A revelation on Jesus walking on water

The revelation which the Holy Spirit gave me was awe-inspiring because I hadn’t thought much about this verse. I just marvelled that Jesus walked on the sea, thereby proving His power over the elements. The revelation that I received was: If the world was founded upon the seas and established upon the waters (according to Psalm 24:2-3), then Jesus walking on the water proved his dominion over the world. The world is His footstool and Him walking on the water meant that and not just a mere exhibit of His power.

Peter’s Prophetic Act

Watching Jesus walk on the waters of the sea, Peter also wanted to walk on the water towards Jesus. There is a lot that the Holy Spirit unfolded to me here. Adam was given dominion over the earth which he forfeited to satan (Genesis 3). We as humans are supposed to have dominion on the earth, which is the world, as God originally intended. Adam not only forfeited his dominion but also ours, hence satan became the ruler of the earth.

Jesus came to redeem fallen mankind (you and I). Here (when walking on the sea), Jesus was walking in full dominion, proving his dominion over the earth, as the second and last Adam.

Therefore, Peter did a prophetic act and was now showing his dominion on the earth as a human by walking on the water/sea upon which the world was established. Peter did this even before Jesus died and rose up again with our redemption and victory. Peter demonstrated how mankind can again have dominion over the earth – by fixing our eyes on Jesus. This is why believers have authority.

Dominion Over The Earth

Therefore, to take dominion over the earth, our focus must be on Jesus just like Peter did when he walked on the water. Peter was able to walk on the sea only as long as he had his eyes fixed on Jesus. The elements raged against him and the other disciples on the boat, while this act of dominion was performed. Even while the sea was raging in the storm, Jesus walked on the sea unfazed by the storm around him. Jesus overpowered darkness and the storms and defied the natural laws.

Sometimes, it is the enemy who stirs up the storm, even in nature. We need to keep that in mind. Peter when walking on the sea, was not walking by sight but by faith because at the fourth watch of the night there would have been so much darkness that he wouldn’t have been able to see where he was walking. He only saw Jesus and wanted to go towards him. If he saw the sea he was walking on, he maybe, might not have stepped out.

The Resistance

Taking dominion comes with resistance from darkness. It comes with spiritual warfare. You can take domninion only as long as you have you eyes fixed on Jesus. The moment you take your eyes away from Him, the resistance takes over and even begins to win. This is again demonstrated by Peter who overpowered the storms and the raging sea and defied natural laws of gravity, when he walked on the water amidst the storm, with his eyes fixed on Jesus. However, when he looked at the wind and the raging sea, he was afraid, and he began to sink. The forces overtook Peter.

If not for him crying out for help, he would have drowned. Look at what Jesus tells Peter. He said ‘You of little faith’. Peter began to fear when he saw the wind and the storm. It is a natural human response. However, we are supposed to walk by faith and not by sight (not by what we see around us).

The Fourth Watch Of The Night

Also, the Holy Spirit brought to my attention about the fourth watch of the night. Why did Jesus come to his disciples at the fourth watch of the night? It has a significance. The fourth watch of the night is the final watch of the night. It is the darkest hour of the night. Also, it is the darkest before dawn both in the natural world and spiritually-speaking. The most amount of spiritual warfare at night happens during the fourth watch. It is exactly at this watch that Jesus chose to demonstrate his dominion over the earth as the second Adam.

It was also Jesus’s prophetic act of overcoming darkness because His death and resurrrection were fast-approaching at the time of walking on the sea. After the fourth watch there is light and dawn. Jesus was prophetically showing His total and complete victory over the earth and the darkness over the earth.
